ISSUE 7: Spring 2024

 Editor’s Note

May 19, 2024

It is with great pride and pleasure that we share with you the seventh issue of Grey Matters Journal TU. This issue represents a wonderful culmination of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by Temple University students. Although I am sad to leave what has been such a meaningful organization to me, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with all the inspiring and talented people who have contributed to Grey Matters during my time as a member.

I joined Grey Matters in the Spring of 2021 as a scientific reviewer for one of its first articles. I immediately felt a connection with the organization—one I am hopeful has been a common experience among our past members and continues to be shared among our future contributors. From my time as scientific reviewer to Science Managing Editor and finally as Editor-in-Chief, I have been privileged to take part in an effort that extends beyond the Temple community and that has taught me continuously along the way.

Since its foundation, Grey Matters TU has been composed of many exceptional students. As some of you may have noticed, a few articles under the label “Feature Columns” have appeared on our website throughout Spring 2024. What was once an idea generated by past Grey Matters Executive Board members has, with the talent and efforts by this publication cycle’s EBoard and very first feature column article members, resulted in what I hope you will find to be a delightful addition to Grey Matters issues.

This issue has produced articles that have expanded my understanding of neuroscience in ways I hope you can also appreciate. Perhaps you have always been curious about the intersection between healthcare and technology. In this case, I invite you to explore Digital Phenotyping: How Our Phones Can Monitor Psychiatric Disorders. If you speak another language or are interested in learning about the effects language has on our brains, I encourage you to read Bilingual Brains. What evokes anxiety may lead the way in the study of the nervous system and the various conditions that affect it; read more about this topic in From Fear to Future: The Rabies Virus. These are just a few of the insightful articles that can be found in this issue.

Being a part of Grey Matters has been an invaluable experience, one that has taught me how to lead, communicate, and collaborate. As I graduate, I look forward to all that the future holds for Grey Matters TU. I know that the incoming Editor-in-Chief, Caedyn Lipovsky, will do an outstanding job of leading Grey Matters and furthering its mission—so please welcome her with warm arms.

Enjoy the articles and artwork in this issue. We thank you for your continued support of our organization, and may the results of our members’ efforts prove thoughtful.

Kind Regards,

Madison Wolf
