Editor’s Note

It is with great pride that we welcome you to the third issue of Grey Matters Journal. Truly, these articles and accompanying artwork are a testament to the incredible talent within the Temple community. Reflecting on this publication cycle, however, it is hard not to feel a little bittersweet. As I graduate, I leave behind what has been my passion project over the past few years. 

Grey Matters started out as a small thought in my head in the spring of 2020. COVID-19 pushed me out of Temple’s nest and back into my childhood home, and I suddenly found myself isolated. Starting Grey Matters was my attempt at connecting with my college community and engaging more deeply with neuroscience, a field that fascinates me. 

As authors wrote about different disorders (The Highs and Lows of Bipolar Disorder, Burning From The Inside Out: Life With Fibromyalgia), I too learned about them in great detail. Some articles answered questions that have always been at the back of my mind. The Olympics have always made me wonder about the seemingly-superhuman qualities of athletes, so I was thrilled to read The Psychological Distinction of Athlete’s Brains in this issue. But, as much as I have learned, these past few semesters have taught me far more than the wonders of neuroscience.

Being the Editor in Chief of Grey Matters has taught me how to be a better collaborator, communicator, and overall leader. I have often thought of Grey Matters as a work in progress; in some ways, my time as Editor in Chief has felt a bit like building a plane at the same time as flying it. My favorite part, though, has been seeing the reach of Grey Matters. It blows my mind that an idea that used to live in my head now holds meaning to many, both within and beyond Temple University.

Helming this organization has been the highlight of my college experience, and something I will never forget. As sad as I am to go, I know that Olivia Rojek, the incoming Editor in Chief, will do an excellent job of furthering the mission of Grey Matters Journal.
