ISSUE 9: Spring 2025

Editor’s Note
June 11th, 2025
I am pleased and proud to show you all the ninth issue of Grey Matters Journal TU. This semester’s journal is a demonstration of the hard work and perseverance demonstrated by our team of authors, editors, executive board members, and artists. This issue, you will find a wide variety of articles with a range of topics and thoughtfully crafted art pieces that showcase the hardwork and craft of the contributors.
During my time as editor-in-chief, I witnessed the hard work and dedication by all members of this organization. As the only student-run neuroscience journal at Temple, it is my honor to witness the work that so many of the members have contributed. I am especially excited to pass the torch to Johanna Sabio, the upcoming editor-in-chief for the Fall 2025 semester. This semester, I am pleased to announce that there will be twelve articles to read. These articles have a range of topics from the therapeutic use of DMT to the neurobiology of postpartum depression to the science and benefits of naps.
When perusing through this issue you may find yourself curious about the importance of animal models in research. In this case, I suggest reading the feature column: “How Animal Models Paved the Way for Innovation in Neuroscience.” If you are more interested in the impact of gene therapies on neurodegenerative disease, I would suggest reading “Gene Therapy in Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Path Toward Treating Multiple Sclerosis.” Alternatively, if you were wondering about language development, you should definitely consider reading “The Brain and Language Development: Exploring the Role of Nature vs. Nurture.” However, if you are fascinated by epigenetics and its influence on mental illnesses, please read “The Epigenetics Behind Bipolar Disorder.” If none of these topics peak your interest, there are a variety of others for you to read such as “Beyond Rest: The Neurobiology of Naps and Their Impact on Cognitive and Emotional Health” and “Morality Under a Microscope: Moral Actions and Their Impact on the Brain.” This issue, I truly believe that there is something for everyone!
One key goal of Grey Matters is that our organization is dedicated to making sure everyone–science background or not–is able to read and understand the articles we present. If you do not have a background in the sciences, I would still suggest reading as you might learn something new or understand a topic of interest at a deeper level.
Overall, I hope you enjoy the articles and art pieces of issue 9. Thank you for your continued support from everyone at Grey Matters TU.
Kind regards,
Caedyn Lipovsky
